Dangerously Hot Weather During A.I.

Ten days ago when we started the heifer protocol for A.I. we were experiencing below-normal temps that were forecast to continue for about 30 days. Well the weathermen were wrong!

Today’s A.I. day and there’s a dangerous heat/humidity combination out there – going up to a feels-like temp of 108 degrees! Knowing a couple of days beforehand what weather we’d be dealing with, we purchased a canopy to cover the A.I. Tech during his hours of work in the chute.

Ranch life, gotta love it!

Dangerously hot weather as Taylor-Made Ranch A.I.s heifers. #TaylorMadeRanch

We’re using Churchill Red Bull for the Hereford sire. He’s got impressive stats – calving ease +7.1, low birthweight -.4

We’re also using a Silvy Angus sire – SA David Harris 138 so a couple of these heifers can calve pure F1 Black Baldy calves. Calving ease +13 and birthweight is -.8

Our A.I. protocol includes a double A.I. session for each heifer 6-8 hours apart. So tonight we’ll bring them through the chute again and increase our odds of a positive pregnancy.

Y’all stay safe out there!

TMR Building Better Genetics Though A.I. Program

Today we’re sending a batch of our heifers through the 10-day protocol to perform A.I.

We utilize A.I. to continue building better genetics in our herd.

These specifically-chosen heifers are the offspring of some of our most productive females. We’ll probably be using Churchill Red Bull 200Z for the high-profile sire. He’s high in calving ease, growth & udder scores. And according to Champion Genetics he was named the Grand Champion Hereford Bull at the 2013 Houston Stock Show.

We’re looking forward to seeing his offspring!

LOOK! A Super-DARK Registered Heifer

We get lots of compliments on the dark red coat many of our Herefords have. We love the darker colors too. But this girl? Now THIS girl is one of the darkest red calves we’ve ever had!

And her immunizations & boosters have been administered as part of our rigorous herd-health program. She’s as gentle as she can be and ready to become a vital part of your herd.

Night-Time Nusiance

Rat snake at the chicken coop #TaylorMadeRanchIf you’ve got chickens, sooner or later you’ll have to deal with a rat snake. We only have hens, we don’t have any hatchlings. So I’m not worried he would hurt the hens, he’s just looking for a quick egg meal.

What he doesn’t know is that I collect eggs almost as soon as they’re laid, they never stay in the nesting boxes for long. So his eggy meal is denied.

Oh, and that lump you see in his belly? Yep, he ate the golf ball that I keep in the nesting box. LOL.

But rat snakes have a valuable place in our ecosystem. They do a fine job of keeping mice in check. A good thing if you’ve plopped your home in the middle of what used to be an open cow pasture!

Of course venomous snakes we’ll dispatch. But all others are simply relocated.

We have these 47″ snake grabbers that safely captured this snake off the chicken coop. We walk across the street and toss him far over the fence.

He could certainly  make his way back of course, but it’s our hope he carries on with catching and eating mice!

Memorial Day Not A Day Off Work For TMR!

On this Memorial Day, we pause to offer our heart-felt gratitude for those brave men & women who sacrificed all to keep us free! If you’re enjoying a day off, remember to say a silent prayer for our armed forces.

Here at the ranch we’re spending the day doing some cattle maintenance. First we pregnancy checked some cattle and will send the samples off to the lab first thing in the morning.

Then we moved some heifers that are ready for the bull into the pasture with him. And we palpated a cow to follow-up on her pregnancy. Exciting things to come at Taylor-Made Ranch!

Enjoy your day
