Grandma’s Quick Homemade Rich Chocolate Pudding Recipe

by Texas Homesteader ~

We enjoy a sweet dessert from time to time after supper. And when I’m having a chocolate craving nothing can beat my great grandmother’s homemade chocolate pudding recipe.

HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE PUDDING, not much more time than it takes to open a box of the powdered commercial stuff but with wholesome real ingredients #TexasHomesteader

Jump to Recipe

Pudding is one of the easiest desserts to whip up. And the thick, rich chocolate flavor and silky-smooth texture really satisfies the Choco-Monster in me and FAST!

I’ll show my homemade pudding-making steps here, and I’ll share the recipe below.

Chocolate Pudding With Wholesome Ingredients

My homemade chocolate pudding contains some pretty wholesome ingredients:

      • Cocoa
      • Sugar
      • Milk
      • Flour
      • Butter
      • Egg Yolks
      • Vanilla Extract

Compare these simple ingredients to the ingredients on the back of a box of commercial pudding mix. Yowza!

But there are no scary hard-to-pronounce ingredients in homemade pudding!

And isn’t that one of the main benefits of homemade food? You control the ingredients.

Simple Directions For Homemade Chocolate Pudding

Here’s how I put it all together:

    • Stir together the cocoa, sugar, flour & a dash of salt into my skillet.

    • Add boiling water and butter and turn the heat on medium until butter is melted.

    • Stir in milk, cook until slightly thickened.

    • In a measuring cup thoroughly blend egg yolks into 1/2 cup of tap water and pour it into the pudding, still stirring constantly.

    • Cook a few minutes more until thickened into pudding consistency.

    • Pull from heat and add vanilla and allow the pudding to cool slightly.

See what I mean? Simple!

Gluten-Free Chocolate Pudding Ingredients

We have several members of our family who are gluten intolerant. So I sometimes change grandma’s recipe to make it gluten free for them.

To make my pudding gluten free I replace the flour with a half-measure of cornstarch. It also tends to be sweeter so I reduce the sugar a bit as well. But the other ingredients and procedures are the same.

    • Cocoa
    • Sugar – Reduce to 1 cup
    • Milk
    • Cornstarch to replace flour (2½ Tablespoons)
    • Butter
    • Egg Yolks
    • Vanilla Extract

Serving Homemade Chocolate Pudding

We enjoy our pudding slightly warm so I ladle it into cute vintage jelly canning jars and chocolate decadence is only a spoon away!

But since there’s only two in our household these days, there’s more pudding than we can eat at one time.

So I’ll go ahead and spoon the additional servings into half pint canning jars and top with a lid. Then I slide them into the refrigerator.

Dessert tomorrow (and the next day) are already guaranteed – no extra time in the kitchen for me. Y’all know how I love that!

How easy is that? Homemade pudding in really no more time than it takes to open a box of the powdered commercial stuff, but with wholesome and real ingredients.

How To Make Your Own Homemade Pudding Mix

But I even take it a step further. When I’m mixing up the pudding ingredients for tonight’s dessert, I bring out a jar I’ve labeled and keep in the pantry.

As I’m measuring the ingredients for tonight’s pudding, I measure the same ingredients into this jar.

The label on the jar gives the chocolate pudding measurements I’ve added as well as the wet ingredients that I’ll need to add when it’s time to cook it.

Pre-mixed dry ingredients. HOMEMADE CHOCOLATE PUDDING, not much more time than it takes to open a box of the powdered commercial stuff but with wholesome real ingredients #TexasHomesteader

I even have a shortcut label on the other side that just lists the wet ingredients. It’s got much fewer words so the text size can be larger. Better for these aging eyes. LOL.

But using this kitchen hack means I’ve looked up the recipe and dirtied up the measuring cups only once but have TWO batches of pudding. One for tonight and one for next time.

Now I have my own homemade convenience food waiting in my pantry for those rushed nights or times when unexpected company stops by. Homemade pudding in literally minutes! #WorkSmarterNotHarder.

What Do You Put On Top Of Chocolate Pudding?

We seldom put anything on top of this chocolate pudding, it’s delicious just as it is. But if desired, toppings for chocolate pudding could include:

Homemade Whipped Cream Topping (sweetened with honey)

Homemade Whipped Aquafaba (vegan meringue)

Chopped Nuts

Crumbled Cookie Crumbs

Whatever you like here, really!

YES Laurel! It’s shocking how easy (yet delicious) chocolate pudding is! I have an acquaintance that recently exclaimed “I didn’t even KNOW you could make homemade pudding – I thought it had special ingredients in the box to make it work into pudding!”. No worries, that acquaintance is now properly informed! LOL Pudding is one of those things I make when I want dessert but don’t want to spend lots of time in the kitchen. Glad y’all enjoyed the pudding as much as we do! ~TxH~

Well! I haven’t made homemade pudding in a few years. This does look good!
I like the tip to add the egg yolks to the tap water… In the past, I did not do this and the egg would cook too quick. It’s an art!
    I’ll try it.

Thanks for sharing this easy peasy recipe.
Had hard, heavy rains in early hours this morning and just heard on the news that Johnson County received 5 inches. I will have to check our gauge once it gets light just to see how close we got to those 5 inches.

My mom always told me it was the egg yolks that make the pudding so rich. I always scaled back on the egg yolks because I wanted to conserve my eggs but I could definitely tell a difference in the pudding. Now that we have our own chickens my pudding is always made will the full measure of egg yolk called for in the recipe – delicious! ~TxH~

I’m excited to try this! We don’t buy much in the way of prepackaged food at the store, so this will be perfect. We make most of our food from scratch, so why not try pudding too! And chocolate is my favorite!

It’s not me but my two sons who are addicted to pudding. I’m trying to weed store-bought sweets out of their diet (and I do a pretty good job of it, too, except for those weeks when Man of La Mancha does the shopping!). I’ll be trying this when our fridge’s pudding supply starts to run low…
